What is Dead Heading?
Dead heading is as simple as pinching blooms off plants. It’s something we do in the Greenhouse to promote growth and avoid stunting the plant’s size. When we get plugs (sprouted plants) they are stressed. A lot of things cause this, from bumping around, undergoing temperature fluctuation, or just the sudden light difference from sitting in a box in transit. A lot of plants will suddenly bloom because of this stress.
Why though?
Well mostly because it leads to bigger plants. When the plants realize their flowers have been nipped they tend to bounce back hard and grow quickly. This leads to bigger, bushier plants and more full bodied blooms when done right. As much of a shame as it is to cut off the pretty flowers that the plant has now it only helps in the long run! A few small flowers gone now for dozens of bigger flowers later is more than worth it!
Okay cool, but what are those flowers?!
They’re Calibrachoas! A lot of people just call them “Callis” because it’s easier.
